Kinnie Starr is a multidisciplinary artist and Canadian icon. A self taught musician born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Starr began blazing her own influential trail in 1996. She is of mixed heritage – Dutch/Mohawk, Irish, Russian, French – and has been thinking about family, society, race and equity since her first exposure to social studies in grade 3. Professionally, Starr is an activator in LGBTQ and indigenous circles, a passionate advocate for her communities, a pioneer in Canadian hip hop, and recently scored the first Haida language feature film, Edge of the Knife. She also co-created, researched and hosted the groundbreaking 2016 film, Play Your Gender.
