ᐄᐧᒉᐦᑐᐃᐧᐣ wîcehtowin (unity) is a value that can be found in the Powwow circle with the coming together of nations to celebrate life through dance. A meeting place where culture lives through drumming, singing, sharing stories, food and dancing. Honouring the past, present and future. Likewise, ᐄᐧᒉᐦᑐᐃᐧᐣ wîcehtowin is highlighted in Hip-Hop culture, under “Peace, Unity, Love and Having Fun” and is also part of rave/club culture under the acronym ‘P.L.U.R’ which stands for Peace, Love, Unity and Respect. As a proud Powwow dancer, nēhiyaw B-Girl and devoted club goer, I chose to honour and celebrate my connection in these cultures through ‘wîcehtowin’ by turning beaded accessories into looks that can be proudly worn by all people. ᐄᐧᒉᐦᑐᐃᐧᐣ wîcehtowin honours my heritage, my language and love for dance while also serving as a solution in resistance to cultural appropriation seen in some festival wear. Dedicated in loving memory of Mona Lisa & Murray.
